How important is it to be properly aligned while running?

It is essential for every runner and athlete to be in proper alignment from the start of their training all the way through to the finish line tape. Imagine a stack of 20 building blocks and the bottom block is slightly tilted to one side. What do you think will happen to all the blocks above it? That’s right, they will all fall over. Fortunately, the human body is different; it is an amazing piece of machinery that will not tip over, but instead could lead to several structure and muscle imbalances. If not properly treated, these problems could lead to serious wear and tear type injuries.

Some of the most common wear and tear injuries associated with runners include It-Band Syndrome, Chondromalisia of the Patella, Shin Splints, Patellar Tendonitis, Achilles Tendonitis, Plantar Fasciitis, and Low Back Pain.

Often athletes try to run through their pain, or even lay off for a week or two. Even though these approaches may cause the pain to temporarily subside, they are not a long term solution. If enough time goes by and the athlete ignores their initial injury, it could lead to multiple complications or prolong heeling.

What causes all these wear and tear problems? The list includes but is not limited to increasing mileage, increasing the volume of activity, increasing the intensity of training, a change in training surface, training on crowned roads, training on a tight track, hill training, running style, worn shoes, overpronation, leg-length discrepancy, bow-legged, knocked kneed, quadriceps/hamstring weakness or adductor/abductor weakness. Some of the most common treatments include spinal and extremity adjusting, different types of muscle work, cold laser, prescription orthortics, and running shoes that are specifically designed for your feet.

Repairing wear and tear injuries is like putting together an enormous puzzle……Each piece is crucial to completing the overall runner’s picture. Sometimes the puzzle picture is clear, when it is not, timely seek professional care.
